I had a little discussion with Maxine Rhoads, Board Member and Team Leader of the upcoming trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, about one of the ways they will be helping the Lakota people during this trip. The team will take and distribute knit hats on the reservation. Read on to find out all the details.

Hats for Pine Ridge

Hats for Pine Ridge

Alicia: So, you’re collecting donations of handmade knit hats for the people on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Why is that?

Max: The winter months are very hard for the Lakota as it gets quite cold and the conditions are harsh. They have no means to keep warm as they don’t have money for fuel to heat their homes or to purchase warm clothes. The children love to pick their own hat, and we love to see their faces knowing that they will be a little bit warmer come the winter months.

Alicia: Is there a particular volunteer organization that makes them?

Max: No, just several industrious ladies who have donated their love, time, energy and talent into making hats of all colors and sizes.

Alicia: Do you still need more?

Max: Yes, we could use them for men, women and children. We also found out that we will be seeing more children than expected at the Vision Clinics. Anyone who has the time and talent is more than welcome to make them.

Alicia: Are you collecting other handmade items such as scarves or blankets?

Max: Scarves would be great as well. As far as blankets go, we will be seeing over 1200 people so it would be difficult to decide who would get the blankets if they are limited numbers.

Alicia: If someone would like to make hats or scarves, how do they get in touch with you so that they can make arrangements with you before you leave on September 7th?

Max: They can email me directly at weagle56@frontiernet.net and put “Hats for Pine Ridge” in the subject line.

Alicia: How long will you be collecting these items?

Max: Indefinitely. We’ll take the ones we receive in time for the trip with us. However, we can collect the whole year through and take them to Pine Ridge on future trips or ship them.

Alicia: Thanks for your time, Max, and we wish you well on the trip!
