How Do We Help?
We felt it important to work with a well-established and trustworthy organization that already had roots in the community. Not only was it important that we trust the organization in question, but the local people had to trust them as well. We came in contact with the founder of the InterContinental Christian Ministry (ICCM), an agency which works to spread the gospel and offers free medical care to those of all faiths in rural Kenya.
We realized that WAGC shared many of the same goals as ICCM concerning serving those most in need of medical care in the rural areas. Our foundation partners with ICCM to hold free medical camps in the rural villages surrounding Eldoret. WAGC also provides a major portion of the funds necessary to purchase the medicine and medical services for the villagers. To learn more about our experiences in Kenya, read our Special Africa Report.
What Problems Do The Villagers Face?
One of the most serious problems the local villagers face is the lack of clean water. Most people must walk several miles a day for water and carry heavy gallon jugs by hand or on a bicycle. Severe drought is a daily threat. There is a lack of sanitary conditions which begets diseases such as malaria and typhoid-- diseases we in America no longer face.
There are no established hospitals or medical care facilities in these villages. People must walk miles for help. This journey can prove difficult--sometimes impossible. Poverty makes it impossible to afford medical care even if they could reach a hospital.
Every day in a small Kenyan village is about survival.
What Is The Current Situation?
A return trip to Eldoret was planned for January 2008. As you may be aware, presently there is a great deal of unrest and violence in Kenya due to the results of the recent presidential election. The sitting president was reelected amidst charges of rigging the ballots in his favor. This has led to open tribal warfare and very dangerous situations. The town of Eldoret where we set up our base camp has been likened to a war zone. Hundreds have been killed or critically injured. Thousands of people have become displaced with their homes and businesses destroyed.
The very act of lining villagers up for medical care puts them at grave risk of open assault. Therefore we have decided to postpone our trip to Kenya until such time as it is safe for not only our team members but the people as well. Although we have been asked to send financial support to aid these displaced villagers, we have made the decision to hold the funds designated for this trip until it appears it is safe to return to Kenya or another area in Africa.
We have also decided to set up a separate fund specifically to aid our partners in Africa, the InterContinental Christian Ministry (ICCM) in providing food, blankets and other necessary supplies to those refugees currently living in squalid tent cities in the areas we serve. Feel free to contact WAGC for more information about the situation or to help raise awareness and funds for this great need. Of course a monetary gift would be gratefully accepted. Please use our donation form to send contributions. Thank you!
