From July 20th through the 27th we will make another trip to South Dakota to work on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. We will be holding four days of workshops at the Cheyenne River Youth Project (CRYP) in Eagle Butte and painting and sprucing up the classrooms at Takini School, a small tribal school in the middle of the prairie.
Over the years, we have developed a warm and trusting relationship with the administration of both the organization and the school. This makes it possible for us to work together and come alongside the wonderful programs already in place.
We are now collecting new hats, scarves, gloves, underwear and socks!
Why the need for these items?
This area is not only one of the poorest in our country, but in winter it suffers some of the severest winter weather in our nation. When your children get up in the morning they are in a warm house, and they know that they will have breakfast and clean clothes to wear.
For the children of the reservation, many do not have the things we all take for granted. Some are homeless. Many live in very crowded conditions. Some of the children attending Takini live at the school during the week, in run down trailers, as they live up to 100 miles away from the school. This makes life very difficult for them. Together we can make a difference in their lives, showing them that someone cares!
If you’d like to help by making a hat, you can click here for a popular pattern that one of our volunteers has used. You can also find another at this site here, or just search the web and pick your favorite!
We are accepting hats in all colors, sizes and shapes for children K through 12th grade. These hats will not only keep the children warm, but they are a warm reminder that someone cares. If you don’t knit or crochet, please spread the word to your friends that do!
If you would like to be a part of this outreach, please contact Karen Moore in Waynesboro, VA at 540-836-5790 or in PA Carol Fanelli at 717-278-0979. We would like to bring at least 100 pairs of socks and underwear (sizes 5-12) and 100 hats, gloves and scarves.
Please send you donations by July 1st to give us time to organize and pack the items to transport to South Dakota.
Thank you in advance for your generosity!
